The Maasai Environment: The Maasai are located in East Africa in Southern Kenya and the Northern part of Tanzania. The climate in this area is diverse but is mostly pretty warm with the temperature throughout the year ranging from 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit, they also get some rain with there being 2 rainy seasons one in March to May which are the “long rains'' and then from October to December which are the “short rains.” It is very sunny with there being an average of 8.6 hours of sunshine throughout the year. The population of the Maasai live in the rural areas of Tanzania and Kenya in the savannah grasslands and they are mi...

Art as a Culture

Lascaux Caves in France 1. Functions of Early Art: The cave artists were trying to express what they saw in the wild when they hunted. They likely had these images in there head based on the time of the year and would draw the different animals like horses, bison, deer, and aurochs. They likely did not draw people because they were focused on hunting and all the types of animals depicted were likely hunted. There have been theories of a spiritually meaning behind these paintings and if so then it would make sense to not draw as many people since they possibly believed this was a way of bringing a greater chance of getting a successful hunt. The painting could tell us that maybe they had a successful methods of hunting and gathering that led to them having the time and energy to focus on these paintings since it did require a good amount of effort due to the obstacles of drawing in a cave. These painting could also tell us that they might of had a spiritual aspects of there lives s...

Politics and Violence

Yanomamo Blood Revenge  1. Yanomamo rules are much different from the Western cultures since they do not live in one big state, rather they live in separate villages all containing anywhere from 50-200 people. When someone kills another person in a village it may lead to fissioning  and the village will split up and later the villages will raid each other, each time killing more people rather then the people who kill be punished.  2. The process of revenge killings is done in raids where a group of 10 to 15 men get together and attack a village that is usually a few days walk away. They will usually kill one person but can sometimes cause massacres. There will usually be a conflict involving a women that will lead to shouting matches, chest pounding, and fights. They may lead up to bow and arrow shootings with intent to kill. This will cause the fissioning of villages that will lead to the revenge killings of the tribes. They will go back and fourth with the raids wanting...

Language Blog

Part 1:  From my perspective I was with my brother in the kitchen cooking and eating and from his perspective he was in the kitchen also eating and making food. At first he would talk and ask questions or try to discuss a popular topic but I would give him only body language which was not enough. He changed his way of communicating because he became very quiet and stopped trying to talk to me and instead just focused on what he was doing instead of talking. He possessed the power when he spoke though he would say something and I would have to give very little communication back. If we were cultures he would be the one with the advantage since he speaks and he also has to power so he might use that and have an attitude of thinking maybe that he is better. In our culture people like immigrants may not be able to communicate so their experience is similar since the power would go to the one who is able to speak the language of the country they are in.  Part 2:   ...

Environmental Adaptations

Image
Zulu:  1.  The environment that the Zulu inhabited is in Southeast Africa in a region that is well-watered and around the coast where they have warm temperatures, high rainfall, and lower river valleys. This allowed for long growing seasons but as you get closer to interior the growing season becomes shorter. It is a subtropical area that is also semi-fertile. Temperatures are between 65 and 85 and it can get wet and humid during winter seasons.  2. A physical adaptation of the Zulu would be there dark skin. It protects them from the sun that is constantly radiating UV rays that can damage cells of the body. Since they live in the savanna they must have dark colored skin to keep at homeostasis. Here you can see how the sun can be a danger since it is always beaming on them.  3: A cultural adaptation would be the clothing they wear. One article of clothing in particular would be the hats they wear. They are made from grass and worn by women to protect from the h...

The Nacerima Lifestyle

Scared- I decided to use this word since it explains a part of why they act the way they do. It's not a bad thing to be scared because life is scary. In places where it is still undeveloped they likely rely on spiritual aspects of life for meaning. Life can be very scary and sad since for humans especially events like childbirth can be very traumatizing and leave the mom and/or baby dead. Human childbirth in a natural setting can be very dangerous and events like this could lead to people seeking spiritual comfort and closure since bad things can often happen without warning.  Strong- The Nacerima people are extremely strong because suffering is a part of their lives voluntarily and has caused this sort of lifestyle. Diseases from microorganisms can be a big part of these peoples life since they are not in the developed world where there is a lot of sanitation. People dying but not having a valid reason like bacteria, virus, or other to help understand what happened. Could le...
